FAQ

What Is The History Of Barre? The barre method of exercises was pioneered by Lotte Berke, a modern ballet dancer, over fifty years ago.  Berke combined her ballet barre training with physical rehabilitative therapy after a back injury. The first Lotte Berke Method studio opened in London in 1959 and in the United States, 1971.  Many barre programs are based on the Lotte Berke method. Leaders in the barre fitness industry such as Fred Devito and Elisabeth Halfpapp, co-founders of Exhale, Core Fusion and Corebarre Fit, "grew up" studying, practicing and teaching this method.

Is Barre Just For Women And Is Experience Necessary?  Barre is an excellent practice for women and men! Beginners to elete athletes will benefit but don't let the small, controlled and repetitive movements fool you into thinking that barre practice is easy.  Repeating a variety of precise movements to engage every major muscle group in the body for an hour-long class requires focus, commitment and a willingness to be challenged.  Every age, size and shape can work a little harder, go a little deeper and/or hold a little longer because barre practice minimizes stress on joints, ligaments and tendons and can be tailored to the needs and goals of each practitioner.

How Often Do I Need To Practice To Benefit From Barre? Consistent practice will change the way your body feels, how you feel in your body and how your body moves.   If barre is your only fitness activity, then practicing 3 or 4 times per week will yield the most benefits.  If practicing barre is in addition to other cardio and strength conditioning programs, then one or two classes per week is a great way to prepare you for and help you prevent injuries from your other activities.

How Do I Schedule A Class, Private Or Semi-Private?  A one-time private class is strongly recommended for beginners and anyone new to our barre so we can get to know you and learn about your goals, strengths and any concerns you may have.  To schedule, email: barndoorbarre@gmail.com, text/call: 410.905.8158 or complete the form on our contact page.

Can I Take Class With An Injury?  Client safety is our priority.  The nature of the injury, where you are in your recovery and being cleared by your medical professional are factors we consider to determine whether it is safe to practice. Informing us of any injury or limitation at the beginning of class is your responsibility in order for appropriate modifications, adjustments or alternatives  to be made.  The instructor should also be made aware of any pain or discomfort experienced during or after class.  The small class size enables regular communication with the instructor about your needs and concerns without being disruptive to the flow of class. Practicing at our barre will help you understand the difference between physical discomfort due to working hard and pain that is related to injury or a movement that just isn't right for your body.

Can I Take Class If I am Pregnant? Practicing at our barre, with a medical professional's note, is a wonderful way to stay active and fit throughout your pregnancy  Modifications and alternative exercises and postures will be provided to keep you and your baby safe and healthy. Listening to your body, perhaps more than ever, is critical to prevent over-exertion and over-working your abdominal muscles.
